
Matthew Robinson
Just Getting Started



Matthew Robinson holds degrees from the University of Manitoba (B.Mus.) and the University of British Columbia (M.Mus.) in saxophone performance and is currently enrolled in his doctoral studies at the University of Alberta. His achievements include winning the 2015 UofM Concerto competition, the 2016 Adam N. Leckie Memorial Trophy, first place in winds at the 2018 Canadian Music Competition finals, and first place in the 2020 American Protege International Concerto Competition.
Matthew has performed as a soloist with both the University of Manitoba Wind Ensemble and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, as well as in venues throughout North America, including Carnegie Hall. In 2018, Matthew and collaborative pianist Lisa Rumpel embarked on the inaugural tour for Living Room Live, an in-home concert series. In 2022, Matthew co-founded the Prairie Saxophone Initiative (PSI) with saxophonist Chinley Hinacay. As an ensemble PSI has embarked on three tours across the Canadian prairies and have been featured as soloists with the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and the Royal Canadian Artillery Band. Other accomplishments include multiple world premieres at conferences across Canada, as well as in Europe and Asia.
In addition to an active performance schedule, Matthew prides himself on his dedication to improving his skills as an educator. He frequently attends Conferences and Masterclasses to learn new techniques to apply in his private studio, as a clinician, and as a guest artist for masterclasses at Universities across Western Canada. As an instructor Matthew has held positions with the Canadian Mennonite University and the University of Manitoba. Currently Matthew is the Saxophone Studio Teaching Assistant at the University of Alberta.

Matthew has performed extensively as a solo saxophonist across Canada, showcasing his musicality in various concerts and festivals. As a performer Matthew strives to take his audiences away to impossible worlds, through the experiences of life, and finally back to reality.

He has collaborated with numerous esteemed musicians and ensembles, each leaving a lasting mark on his musicality and style; None more so than the Prairie Saxophone Initiative (PSI.) Founded by Matthew and his esteemed colleague, Chinlay Hinacay, PSI exists to commission and promote the works of underrepresented Canadian composers throughout Canada and across the globe.

Matthew shares his knowledge and experience through teaching, inspiring his students to pursue their goals, music related or not. His commitment to education extends beyond his students, Matthew is constantly attending conferences and masterclasses, looking to improve as an educator to benefit his students.
